Getting you through allergy season
Let’s talk about the causes
Seasonal allergies are characterized by respiratory and nasal symptoms that appear at certain times of the year, depending on what tree or bush is the cause.
During the spring
Pollen allergies spread (birch, maple, poplar and others).
During the summer
Grasses and graminaceous plants in general are the main allergens (wheat, grass, corn, etc.).
During the fall
Autumn is hay fever season (caused by ragweed).
Ragweed vs poison ivy
These are two completely different species. Ragweed pollen is to blame for hay fever and doesn’t cause any skin reactions. Conversely, contact with poison ivy triggers redness and itching. As the saying goes, gather thistles, expect prickles.

Spring and summer allergies exhibit the following symptoms:
- Sneezing
- Recurring itchiness of the eyes, nose and palate
- Tearing
- Nasal congestion and runny nose
Hay fever gives rise to:
- Red, swollen eyes

- Breathing problems, cough, asthma

Let’s talk about solutions
An ounce of prevention…
The good news is that the above symptoms may be prevented with certain over-the-counter products. Antihistamines are most often preferred for treating symptoms across the board, to be taken orally during the entire allergy period. Some targeted medications are also available over the counter; discuss the options available to you with your pharmacist.
To best prevent your seasonal allergies, your pharmacist can prescribe certain medications.
